A Review of The Palmer House Hotel in Chicago

palmer house hilton hotel

My favorite thing about scoring a room on the executive floor was having easy access to the lounge. The failed mobile check-in ended up working out in my favor, though, since I then used the chat tool to request an upgrade, landing myself an executive-level king room, free of charge. The hotel offered an upgrade to a Hip & Historic Suite for $100, and wouldn't budge on the price, despite some Hilton properties offering suites to Diamond members without an upgrade charge. While the hotel was kind enough to add my Honors number to the Hotels.com booking — it never hurts to ask! The first, known as The Palmer, was built as a wedding gift from Potter Palmer to his bride Bertha HonorŅ. It opened on September 26, 1871 but incredibly was destroyed by fire thirteen days later in the Great Chicago Fire. It was advertised as "The World's Only Fire Proof Hotel" and contained a grand lobby, ballrooms, elaborate parlors, bridal suites, cafes and restaurants.

Family Fun Package

While I was all prepared to have to check in the hip and historic way — in person at the front desk — a mobile key magically appeared on my day of arrival. Book the Best Available Rate at this property on HistoricHotels.org and receive a complimentary one-year family membership (a $30 value) to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The next trip could be twice as rewarding with the 2X Points Package when you book your stay at select Hilton Hotels & Resorts.

Historic Golf Courses

The hotel was purchased in 1945 by legendary hotelier Conrad Hilton and it remains one of the company’s flagship properties. Today, the Palmer House remains an iconic fixture of Chicago and it's Loop District as the vibrant city continually expands and evolves. After not having much luck on the 21st floor, I headed down to 12, where I encountered an error every time, even though I added a valid credit card number. Guests can experience a night at this historic hotel by booking at palmerhousehiltonhotel.com. If you’ve stayed at Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel, you’ve joined a long list of people who have spent a night at 17 East Monroe Street.

I've stayed at many "brand-new" hotels over the years — as both a product reviewer and an average Joe, I tend to seek them out. Hotels that bill themselves as historic, meanwhile, remain an occasional curiosity, if for nothing more than a quick look. President Grant was married to Bertha Palmer’s sister Ida, and in 1879, the hotel hosted the “Greatest Banquet in American History” to commemorate the return of the President’s trip from around the world. A gala was hosted for 500 dignitaries and Civil War heroes, including General William Sherman and Phillip Sheridan, with Mark Twain, Potter’s friend, as master of ceremonies.

PLAN AN EVENT

The original Palmer House was built in 1871 by Potter Palmer who began his career as a bank clerk in upstate New York. He later became a dry-goods store owner in Chicago where he revolutionized the retail trade. He was the first to make large window displays, to use big advertising spaces, to send goods on approval to homes and to hold bargain sales. He became a brilliant hotel man as he applied his successful department store methods to the operation of his hotel.

Rebuilding From the Great Chicago Fire

He saw no reason why clerks, chefs and head waiters should not be subject to the same discipline as floorwalkers and counter-jumpers. The Hotel Gazette said he could be seen at all hours in the lobby and corridors of the Palmer House watching and directing. I also had a chance to check out some of the event venues, since I was at the hotel for a wedding. The main ballroom felt especially historic, but the staff was friendly and accommodating, and the catering was very good overall.

Guest Services

While we don’t cover all available credit cards, our editorial team creates and maintains all of the analysis of these cards, and our content is not influenced nor subject to review by any credit card company, bank or partner prior to (or after) publication. With my Honors number attached, I did have access to my usual Diamond benefits, though, which was a very nice surprise! That meant executive-lounge access (or free breakfast downstairs), free Wi-Fi and a modest upgrade.

Ideally, I'd avoid parking a car if you can, though, given the sky-high parking fees — $55 for self-parking, or a whopping $82 per night for valet. While it can get unbearably cold in winter — as it certainly was during part of my mid-February visit — many of the city's top attractions are just a short walk away. The information for the Hilton Aspire Amex card has been collected independently by The Points Guy.

The hotel attracted well-to-do permanent residents who enjoyed the spacious quarters, master bedrooms, walk-in closets, multiple bathrooms, housekeeping and porter services. By 1925, Palmer erected a new 25-story hotel which was promoted as the largest hotel in the world. The architects were Holabird & Roche who were well known for their groundbreaking Chicago School of skyscrapers. They also designed the Stevens Hotel, the Cook County Courthouse, the Chicago City Hall and the Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City. We booked the first two nights of the stay via Hotels.com, so TPG could collect night credits and 10x miles with his Capital One Venture Rewards credit card, at a total cost of $322, including taxes and fees. Since I had a wedding to attend at the hotel over the weekend, I booked a third night directly with Hilton in order to maximize my Diamond benefits — a perk of the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card — and earn points within the Hilton Honors program, instead.

Scoring an upgrade to the executive floor made a big difference overall, since we could use the express elevators, but the lounge itself was overwhelmingly crowded, especially toward the end of Sunday breakfast and throughout the evening happy hours. Ultimately, while it's a decent business hotel, if a peaceful getaway is what you're after, Palmer House is not your spot. Designed in the style of the High French Empire, the room’s staircase, statuary and entry pay homage to the Paris Opera. The grand staircase catches the eye when entering the hotel, a sign that something extraordinary is taking place in the room. Originally the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, The Empire Room added dancing in 1933 during the World’s Fair and it was a quick crowd-pleaser. When Conrad Hilton purchased the hotel in 1945, he suggested entertainment be escalated to full cabaret reviews, with as many as three opening acts, including the Merriel Abbott dancers.

The continental buffet included a variety of cold items — deli meats, fruit, pastries and a diverse selection of cereal. Breakfast was included for anyone with access, and included a mix of fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee (that the staff didn't seem in much of a hurry to replace whenever it ran out, which was frequently). Hilton doesn't list the square footage for some room types, since they can vary significantly from one room to the next, given the historic nature of this particular hotel.

After a couple of follow-ups they finally showed up the next day, but with prosecco, instead of Champagne. While I normally wouldn't complain about not receiving an amenity that isn't guaranteed, I was excited about surprising my girlfriend on Valentine's Day, so I was bummed that the spread hadn't arrived as promised. I decided to upgrade to the full buffet, though, which got me access to hot dishes and made-to-order omelets for an extra $8.

Meetings & Events

The new Palmer House was once remembered for the fact that 225 silver dollars were imbedded in the checkerboard tile floor of the barber shop. They were put there by William S. Eaton, lessee of the shop, who cashed in on the idea within the next few years. Everyone wanted to see that floor out of sheer curiosity, or to verify that a fool could thus waste his money. As a result, things tended to get lost in the shuffle, from the lounge coffee machine often being empty to staff requests (or even phone calls from the room) going unanswered. Despite receiving confirmation in the app, our "Champagne" and chocolate-covered strawberries weren't in the room as I expected and weren't delivered later in the night.

History is Hott - Palmer House Hilton

To celebrate the sesquicentennial, the property is launching a Bertha Brownie Latte a playful spin on the original fudge brownie, available at Lockwood Express. She commissioned French muralist Louis Pierre Rigal to compose 21 unique frescoes on the lobby’s magnificent domed ceiling. The murals honored Greek mythology, including Aphrodite the goddess of love; Apollo the god of music; and Pluto the god of the underworld. The lobby ceiling has been restored inch by painstaking inch by Lido Lippi, who’d undertaken a similar project for the Sistine Chapel. To restore the ceiling of Palmer House, he worked flat on his back raised on scaffolding throughout the night while listening to Mozart. Potter Palmer, a Chicago businessman who helped develop Chicago’s iconic State Street, was introduced by his former business partner, Marshall Field, to Bertha HonorÃĐ Palmer, a young socialite.

While today a destination for weddings and gala events, the Empire Room has hosted several legendary entertainers. The original Palmer House was destroyed 13 days after its grand opening in the Great Chicago Fire. Potter constructed the world’s first “fireproof hotel” and two years later, the property reopened on November 8, 1873, to become one of the nation’s longest continually operating hotels. Recently, however, I decided to book a three-night stay for my girlfriend and me at one of the most historic properties of them all, The Palmer House Hilton, Chicago's first hotel to offer elevators, electric lightbulbs and phones in each guest room. And historic it is — in fact, in the case of some of the public areas and ballrooms, I doubt much has changed since Hilton took over the property way back in 1945.

For the Love of Chocolate

The iconic Palmer House, A Hilton Hotel first opened its doors on September 26, 1871, and since then has welcomed millions of guests, hosted legendary entertainers and celebrated countless birthdays, weddings and milestones. As one of the longest operating hotel in America, the Palmer House has an outstanding roster of famous guests including every president since Ulysses S. Grant, numerous world leaders, celebrities and Chicago's movers and shakers. During the World's Fair of 1933, an unknown ballroom team, Veloz and Yolanda won the hearts of the city and performed for more than a year. For fifty years, the hotel was a mecca for Chicago society and visiting luminaries such as Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Oscar Wilde. After befriending Claude Monet, Bertha began decorating the Palmer House with paintings and other French artwork, eventually accumulating the largest collection of impressionist art outside of France.

The Center of Chicago’s Social Scene

The Palmer House was adorned with garnet-draped chandeliers, Louis Comfort Tiffany masterpieces, and a breathtaking ceiling fresco by French painter Louis Pierre Rigal. The fresco was described by columnist George Will as “a wonderful protest of romance against the everydayness of life.” By the 1920s, the decision was made to erect a new 25-story building. Between 1924 and 1927, the Palmer House was rebuilt on the same site but in stages, so not to lose a single day of operations.

Family Fun

The two began an incredible courtship and to show his love and admiration for Bertha, he gifted her with one of the most extravagant wedding gifts ever – the Palmer House hotel. If you’ve stepped foot in the hotel, chances are you’ve been enamored by the ornate lobby with its vaulted ceiling frescoes and impressive chandeliers. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear.

For your business convenience

Aside from the upgrade and free buffet, having the staff add my Honors number also let me text the hotel through the Hilton app — a great feature, at least in theory. I always received a response within a few minutes, but several confirmed requests never materialized, such as the robes I ordered and the Valentine's Day welcome I confirmed before arrival. After checking my name off a list, the host handed me this fun HHonors Gold Member casino chip, which my server promptly collected before instructing me to head straight to the buffet.

I actually had to walk through the lounge to get to and from the elevators, which was fine most of the time, except when the space was packed for Sunday breakfast (not pictured). The brownie was created in the Palmer House Kitchen, specifically under the direction of Bertha Palmer to be served at the World’s Columbian Exposition, or Chicago World’s Fair, in 1893. Bertha, who was president of the Ladies Board for Managers for Exposition, was creating box lunches for the Women’s Pavilion. She asked her chef to prepare a dessert, something more unique than a piece of pie or cake, and something that would be easy to eat and transport.

The Italian marble staircase that takes you to the Empire Room is one of only two constructed in this particular manner; the other is in London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral. Louis Comfort Tiffany designed the 24-karat gold-dipped chandeliers that grace the ceiling, as well as the majestic Winged Angels, at 1.25 tons they were the largest bronze statues he’d ever produced. Shortly after befriending the famous artist Claude Monet in France, Bertha began decorating the Palmer House with paintings and other pieces inspired by her French heritage. She eventually accumulated over 220 paintings, the largest collection of impressionist art outside of France, and willed them to the Art Institute of Chicago – including numerous Monets and Renoirs.

Stanley Turkel was designated as the 2014 and 2015 Historian of the Year by Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This award is presented to an individual for making a unique contribution in the research and presentation of history and whose work has encouraged a wide discussion, greater understanding and enthusiasm for American History. Book a week long vacation, escape for a weekend, or make the most of that next business trip. As a Diamond member, I was entitled to a continental breakfast in the main restaurant, too, which I preferred, given the larger space and selection. The hotel offered an array of Crabtree & Evelyn amenities, including soap, shampoo and body lotion, plus a hair dryer and plenty of washcloths and towels. I wasn't a fan of the lighting, though, especially in the bathroom — the lights were fluorescent and a bit too bright, especially during visits in the middle of the night. The hotel's majesty diminished once the elevator doors opened up, leaving us in a long hallway that felt anything but hip. Fortunately, that made it possible to bypass the "happening" lobby scene and head straight upstairs.

Design Sprint Guide Process, Phases, Templates and Tools to Running a Design Sprints

design sprints

The Sprint Master adds a design brief to a template, explaining challenges and constraints together with a timeline for the launch. Employing a Design Sprint to test new ideas may require some changes to the status quo as teams adjust to the new method. You’ve got a killer idea for a new product, but aren’t sure if it’s viable, and you’d really like to test it out without wasting a lot of resources.

design sprints

What Salary Can You Expect as a UX Designer?

This means identifying the challenge you face, assembling the right team to tackle it, and finding the appropriate time and space to hold the event. Some of the leading companies worldwide, including Google, Uber, Slack, Meta, and the like, use sprints to solve their design challenges. While Google’s culture is particularly suited to sprinting, the GV team wondered if the process could help the companies they were investing in. It wasn’t long before word started to spread even farther afield, due in large part to GV’s sprinting blog, written by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky. Soon they had a massive community following who were eager to try the method themselves.

Lead designer

In his book, Knapp describes how Google Ventures approaches helping startups create and validate solutions quickly. This variation of a design sprint lasts for one week with a clear objective for each day. After the sprint concludes, you can schedule additional design iterations or further testing if there are specific areas where the prototype fell short. If the prototype meets its objectives, transition to the development phase by creating detailed design specifications, aligning with developers, or setting a development timeline.

Since the design sprint process is streamlined and enables teams to produce deliverables and confirm or discard assumptions about users quickly, it helps to keep costs down. Therefore, cash-strapped startups can especially benefit from using design sprints. A design sprint is a methodology invented by Jake Knapp and Google Ventures used to validate ideas through design, prototyping, user testing, and collaboration in only five days. While it won’t leave us with a finished product, it’s debatably the fastest and cheapest way to validate business strategies or product ideas with real users.

Phase 4: Create UI/UX design

They determine which solutions are the most appropriate and should be implemented during the upcoming design sprint steps. Technical experts have a clear idea of the chosen tactics realization. They should be aware of how to build and implement the required solutions.

Ways to Make Authentication Systems More User-friendly

A great designer is required to make your ideas look good, and fast. Teams that simply don’t have 5 days or cannot gather all the team members for the full Sprint can adjust the Sprint and complete it more quickly, in as little as 48 hours. Experienced Sprint Design teams may have already bonded and “know the drill”, so to speak. These teams simply may not need additional days to complete the work. Or you can run a 5-day Design Sprint for more complicated problems or less urgent challenges.

Day 3: Choose the best solution

Here we’ll cover every phase of the traditional design sprint methodology so you have the full gamut when it comes time to organize your design sprint. Continuum, a design and innovation consultancy creates products, services and experiences that work for people and for the businesses that serve them. Based on in-depth consumer research, rigorous analysis of clients' business challenges, and inspired creativity, Continuum uncovers opportunities for innovation and makes them real. Since 1983, Continuum has worked with companies worldwide, including Allsteel, American Express, Amplifon, BBVA, Covidien, Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Samsung, Sprint and Staples. Continuum has offices in Boston, Los Angeles, Milan, Seoul and Shanghai. They have a comprehensive understanding of the product, its features, and its goals.

design sprints

Day 1: Understand and map

The Decide phase pushes the design sprint team to land on a final direction that everyone will work to frame up and build out during the rest of the sprint. Dot Vote is a simple exercise that gets to a decision quickly. Everyone gets three minutes to present their solution while the rest of the team can ask questions. Then, with all sketches hung up on the wall, each team member gets three total votes, represented by dot stickers. If you’ve already done your Sketch work in Figma, create a Figma component to use for dot votes.

More importantly, select members who are committed to the Design Sprint. Each team member needs to dedicate time to the sprint activities and be fully involved. It requires engagement and mobilization over the 2-5 day period. If you have general questions or business inquiries, we’re available Monday through Friday, 5AM - 5PM PST. Delivered design solutions for a range of clients including Coca Cola, Nike and Microsoft.

While the team suggests solutions to look at, the facilitator will place viable solutions on the whiteboard. Before moving on, the facilitator will discuss the customer journey map with each team member individually, tweaking it if necessary. A design sprint is run by a facilitator, or “Sprint Master.” Their first objective is to clarify the problem that needs solving and recruit a team to conduct the sprint. You'll start by exploring the problem and establishing a shared understanding among your team.

It strives to achieve speedy results without skipping any steps required for proper problem solving. In the face of pressing design challenges or limited time, a design sprint is an ideal approach. Sprints can adjust to different business sizes and contexts, offering valuable processes in a limited time span. The next time you face a sticky design problem or time crunch, consider a sprint — you might be surprised at how much you can accomplish in just five days.

The second step is to come up with potential solutions based on your ideas and assumptions. Exploring all the existing options and weighing their pros and cons will allow you to identify the most appropriate ones. The first stage aims to determine the sprint’s purpose and the approaches the team will use to achieve it. Also, it provides an understanding of the audience’s pain points, market specifics, and client expectations. Finally, this phase determines how the decisions affect the overall design of your product and vice versa. Design sprints strive for a fast and result-driven approach.

Listening to local voices is a key part of doing a Design Sprint; developing a deep knowledge of potential users and their daily lives is essential, but logistics can be a challenge. So, what are the most effective ways to get face-time with an international audience who may live on the other side of the world? In this article, we’ll share how Google designers Sumier Phalake, Burgan Shealy, and Koji Pereira bridge geographical gaps by incorporating user-driven techniques to plan their sprints.

What became clear early on was that the unique, structured environment of a Design Sprint can create something magical. The sprint methodology provided an elegant model for innovation and even helped mature teams break from their usual ways of operating. A few days before the design sprint is set to start, prepare participants and set expectations.

At this stage, pause for a moment and come up with a list of the key metrics that your challenge will be judged on. Once you have the list created, the group should set a standard acceptance metric for each. This method will help keep the team on track throughout the next phases. In the “Understand” phase of the sprint, methods of data collection are used to learn everything there is to know about the project. Basically, your team needs to have a comprehensive view of the challenge, inside and out. The GV image above illustrates the major benefit of a Design Sprint.

House: Season 8, Episode 12

house season 8 cast

As for the other woman in his life, House works through some issues with his mother. She shows up in Princeton with her new fiance, Thomas Bell, a man who House has believed for forty years was his biological father. At a cathartic dinner, House reveals his immigration wife (which Bell supports given the U.S. immigration system) and his stint in prison (which his mother knew about from reading the Princeton newspapers). However, Wilson is too tempted and tests Bell's DNA - he's not House's biological father either. In early 2012, it was confirmed that this season was House's last, and it would have a "swan song" episode (a two hour finale consisting of a retrospective and the series finale).

TV News & Guides

However, it's House soon having woman problems as his immigration wife Dominika returns from Atlantic City to tell House that the immigration authorities are coming to test whether their marriage is real. House tries to blow her off, but an offer of $30,000 if he succeeds is too much for him. Unfortunately, they blow the test, but Dominika pleads that she loves House and asks that he not be punished. Immigration gives them one more chance, but it means they have to live together for real. To House's surprise, he enjoys spending time with Dominika and when her citizenship is granted, he keeps this knowledge from her so she will stay.

Both his ex-wife and ex-girlfriend are furious with him, and he's on the hook for two child support payments and one alimony payment. In addition, Rachel announces that she wants to move to Seattle with her new boyfriend Phil and take Sophia with them. When the hospital's coroner (Jamie Elman) begins slicing his own scalp open, he is admitted but will only accept medical care personally decided on by House. However, House is unreachable as he and Wilson embark on a journey for Wilson to forget his upcoming scan and let loose. A man (Kevin Christy) is admitted to the hospital when he begins crying blood, but the team suspects a neurological component when they meet his "girlfriend"—a very lifelike sex doll with whom he's fallen in love, and he also admits why. Meanwhile, House confronts his insecurities when his hooker/companion decides to leave him.

In a subplot, House subjects Taub to a series of prankish 'ambushes' in order to prove to him, in light of Chase's stabbing, that nobody can fully prepare for the unexpected. House and his team face a disciplinary hearing with Dr. Cofield (Jeffrey Wright) after a chemistry teacher (David Anders) is admitted to the hospital with paralysis. But things turn bad when in a fit of psychosis and violence, the patient stabs Chase, ultimately forcing the team into a race against time as they battle to keep Chase alive in the ER. As the patient is going to be transferred, House realizes his syndrome and informs his wife.

House (TV series)

The series' premise originated with Paul Attanasio, while David Shore, who is credited as creator, was primarily responsible for conceiving the title character. House is a medical drama that revolves around the enigmatic Dr. Gregory House and his team of diagnosticians at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. With its innovative storytelling approach and memorable characters, this series captivates audiences and has become a long-lasting TV hit. A significant element contributing to the show's narrative is the superb ensemble cast, embodying their roles with exceptional skill and finesse. Writers Doris Egan, Sara Hess, Russel Friend, and Garrett Lerner joined the team at the start of season two. Friend and Lerner, who are business partners, had been offered positions when the series launched, but turned the opportunity down.

However, when they all fail, he comes up with the craziest scheme yet - faking his own death. This one works and he has the pleasure of texting Wilson during his own funeral to tell him to shut up. The two men head off on motorcycles to enjoy the rest of Wilson's life and House's death.

Eleven months after driving his car into Cuddy's house, three of which were spent on the run and the other eight in prison, House goes before the parole board and learns he has only five days left before he is released. NBC's streaming service will be launching on July 15th and you'll be able to catch up with your most jaded but favorite diagnostic team. No longer a world where an idealized doctor has all the answers or a hospital where gurneys race down the hallways, House's focus is on the pharmacological—and the intellectual demands of being a doctor.

A boy (Riley Lennon Nice) is admitted to the hospital after nightmares about being choked led to breathing problems. His mother tries to balance the medical diagnoses of the team with his Hmong grandfather's belief that the boy is possessed. Meanwhile, Chase and Park debate the meaning of their sex dreams, Dominika discovers House's deception, and Wilson tells House that he (Wilson) has cancer (Stage 2 Thymoma).

They kiss and agree to try being a couple.[115] Throughout season seven, House and Cuddy try to make their relationship work, but Cuddy eventually breaks it off because of House's addiction. House struggles to deal with this and, in the season-seven finale, drives his car into Cuddy's living room in anger. As Lisa Edelstein left the show before season eight, after this incident Cuddy leaves the hospital and House never sees her again. House (also called House, M.D.) is an American medical drama television series that originally ran on the Fox network for eight seasons, from November 16, 2004, to May 21, 2012.

The trial-and-error of new medicine skillfully expands the show beyond the format of a classic procedural, and at the show's heart, a brilliant but flawed physician is doling out the prescriptions—a fitting symbol for modern medicine. Each U.S. network television season starts in September and ends in late May, which coincides with the completion of May sweeps. The series' executive producers included Shore, Attanasio, Attanasio's business partner Katie Jacobs, and film director Bryan Singer. It was filmed largely in a neighborhood and business district in Los Angeles County's Westside called Century City. It received high critical acclaim, and was consistently one of the highest-rated series in the United States. With prison looming, House hatches a number of crazy schemes in an attempt to stay out of jail long enough to be with Wilson during the last months of his life.

While she was the last to join House's Diagnostics Team, Odette Annable made a big impression during the show's final season. While her season seven arc as the Martha M. Masters was short and sweet, we've seen a lot of Amber Tamblyn since when she starred in 24 episodes of Two and a Half Men and being a critical voice around the #MeToo movement. Will also air a mini-marathon of House episodes on Friday, July 24 starting at 2 p.m., so we're catching up with the cast and what they've achieved since we last saw them at Princeton–Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. Just about eight years ago, we said goodbye to the M.D.'s on House after a thrilling eight seasons of unexplained medical cases, exciting friendships and plenty of zingers from Hugh Laurie's Dr. House. After its first five seasons, House was included in various critics' top-ten lists; these are listed below in order of rank.

Another great thing about Illustrator is that, unlike many other car modeling software, it has apps for iOS and Android. This allows you to design anywhere, anytime through the device of your choice, and the iPad app supports Apple stylus’, allowing you to get extra creative with freehand car designing. These programs allow you to create your own models from scratch, customize exteriors and interiors, and produce photorealistic renderings. Car design software isn’t exactly a simple task – far from it – so you need to find software that matches your experience level. 2D programs like Illustrator are the simplest, and if you’re looking to model in 3D then the likes of Fusion 360 are more beginner-friendly than programs like CATIA or Rhino 3D. This is one of the main factors that makes CATIA such a useful automotive design software for leading companies like Tesla. This software to design cars also boasts high quality 3D renderings and simulation tools, allowing you to test out your designs in real-world conditions and fix car design flaws.

For 3D designs, Blender is a very capable open-source free software that offers more advanced modeling and sculpting tools – but will require more technical knowledge and experience to use effectively. This vector graphic design program is easy to use for 2D visual designs, especially if you have some experience with other Adobe products like Photoshop. If you want an amazing car graphics design that stands out from the competition, work with a professional designer. Find and hire a designer to make your vision come to life, or host a design contest and get ideas from designers around the world. As you can see from our reviews, the price of vehicle design software varies greatly, from free car design software like Blender to expensive industrial options like CATIA that cost thousands.

Catia, Solidworks, Fusion 360, Autodesk Alias, and Blender are all popular car body design software. Luckily there are plenty of tutorials and even full courses for most of the best CAD software for car design, but make sure weigh up budgets and time restraints. Clark explains in a blog how he uses Soldiworks CAD to draw, conceptualize, and model cars and then Solidworks Visualizer to produce renderings that are shared with executives. Not only does Solidworks allow him to produce top quality renderings, but also to visualize them in settings like highways and deserts from a more rounded perspective. There’s a fairly steep learning curve, all things considered, but there are courses that teach car design using Blender, as well as numerous YouTube videos showing what’s capable with this program.

In addition to NURBs, Rhino 3D supports point clouds, polygon meshes, and subdivision geometry. The latest version of the software, Rhino 7, allows you to create organic shapes with a range of SubD tools.

Yes, car designers use CAD software to draw designers, create precise 3D models, and simulate them in real-world environments. Solidworks isn’t just used for practical, real-world car designs, but some of the most creative car designs in films and TV shows, too. One particularly interesting is its use by Dave Clark who used it to both create and visualize designs for cars featured in Mission Impossible, Terminator, and Ready Player One. It also has several features designed to improve the efficiency of the car design process.

At around 143,000 to nearly 170,000 tons, all eight currently rank among the 50 biggest cruise ships in the world (although their rankings will shift downward as more big ships debut).

The line just recommends a step up to "smart casual" outfits in its more formal dining rooms and upscale specialty restaurants. In keeping with Norwegian's laid-backness, this might still mean nothing more than a crisper pair of jeans, or maybe slacks with a collared shirt, for men. For women, slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops will do fine.

Raise the roof every night at our spectacular shows including The Choir Of Man, where you sing along to classic rock hits. Norwegian has also thoroughly done away with the concept of big main restaurants with fixed seating. During the winter, the line will move many of its vessels to North America to operate sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas. It also sends a few ships to Asia, Australia and South America, and it'll typically keep a single vessel in Europe, too.

What you'll find on the top decks of Norwegian ships will vary quite a bit depending on the vessel. The line's smaller ships will have at least one or two pools, sunning areas and usually a sports court area — but not all that much else. The Galaxy Pavilion on Norwegian Encore is the biggest of them all. Among added features, it includes a 45-minute escape room experience laced with special effects.

Some taxi drivers have been known to overcharge their customers, so make sure your driver has a metered cab before you get in it. Sofia’s bus system is extensive and can get you just about anywhere you need to go using it. You can use the sofiatraffic.bg website or the Moovit app to help plan your journey. You’ll need the exact change to buy a ticket from the driver on board the bus. Tickets are 1.60 BGN and you can purchase a 10-ride pass for 12 BGN.

Norwegian really is the line where you make the trip what you want it to be. That said, the line does offer some smaller ships that aren't quite as big and bustling as its giants. Download the Cruise Norwegian mobile app via the App Store or Google Play. The first step to planning your cruise is linking your account to to the app. You'll be all set to explore and plan all the things you can do onboard. The Cruise Norwegian App will work automatically when you connect to the ship’s wi-fi when you board the ship.

Like Royal Caribbean ships, Norwegian vessels have an inordinate amount of teen- and tween-friendly attractions — everything from some of the largest waterslides at sea to the only go-kart tracks on the ocean. That makes them particularly appealing to families, including multigenerational groups. Norwegian ships are also loaded with bars, lounges and nightclubs, including always-busy casinos. Put it all together, and you have vessels with a very lively atmosphere — particularly at night. If you had to compare Norwegian ships to something on land, you'd probably say they were like floating versions of the casino resorts you find in Las Vegas.

If you're a U.S. citizen, you don't need a passport for most sailings from U.S. ports (including sailings to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, the Mexican Riviera and Alaska). Norwegian also offers dedicated teen zones and programming on ships for children ages 13 to 17. Called Entourage, the teen zone is a place for teens to hang out, dance and play games, and it's supervised by counselors who plan activities and challenges. Norwegian also has rooms on its ships for babies and toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years.

In 2010, it debuted an entire zone of small studio cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,070-passenger Norwegian Epic, and it has since added them to seven more new ships. One notable outlier among the smaller ships is the 2,186-passenger Pride of America. Sporting a patriotic U.S. theme (you'll find venues named after Thomas Jefferson and John Adams), and a distinct array of lounges and entertainment, it's the only big cruise vessel based year-round in Hawaii.

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. If you’re backpacking Sofia, expect to spend about 60 BGN per day. On this budget, you’ll be staying in a hostel dorm, cooking your meals, limiting your drinking, taking public transportation to get around, and sticking to mostly free activities like free walking tours and hiking. This is an outdoor adventure activity center located inside Borisova Gradina park.

Passengers caught smoking in their cabins will be fined $250 per occurrence. A passport is required for all cruises leaving from a non-U.S. Port and all Panama Canal sailings (regardless of departure port).

The highest summit is Cherni Vrah at 2,290 meters (7,513 feet). It’s surprisingly easy to reach Vitosha’s trails, all you have to do is take a bus to the Simeonovo ski lift. Once you arrive, you’ll feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city, surrounded by craggy rocks and ancient pine trees.

This pricing is quite a bit higher than what some other lines, such as Carnival or Princess, charge for Wi-Fi. Princess recently was charging just $14.99 per person per day for a WiFi package. Instead, you can travel with a state-certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship and a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification. That said, Norwegian strongly recommends that all travelers bring a passport. The go-kart tracks (now on Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy) are quickly becoming Norwegian's signature can-you-believe-this-is-on-a-ship attraction, and they truly are impressive. The biggest two of them, on Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, are nearly 1,400 feet long and sprawl over three decks.

Unveiled in 2019, Norwegian Encore is, notably, the 23rd biggest cruise ship in the world as of this story's publishing (it will drop in the rankings over the coming years as additional megaships debut). At 169,116 tons, it's bigger than all but three Carnival ships. Only Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have significantly more bigger vessels. Smaller only than Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, the brand has become increasingly known for having some of the biggest, most amenity-filled vessels at sea. More than half of its fleet is comprised of vessels that, by today's standards, are considered almost midsize. When you sail with Norwegian Cruise Line, you are cruising on the most innovative and accommodating fleet on the high seas.

Art Nouveau buildings line the street, and there are several small sidewalk cafes where you can grab a coffee and relax. Come here to browse, people-watch, and take in the local pace of life. Paintballing has become increasingly popular throughout Sofia. There are over half a dozen different places you can go that offer equipment rentals, paintballs, and both indoor and outdoor gaming areas. Head for a hike to reach the summit and you’ll be treated to incredible panoramic views over Sofia and the surrounding area.

It’s a perfect budget-travel destination that sees a fraction of the tourists you’ll find in Western Europe. In February 2024, NCL also announced it would no longer dock in Venice, Italy, due to restrictions of the waterways. “While we have made every effort possible to maintain these calls to Venice, the tender operation and overall experience this provides our guests has fallen short of the standard we aim to deliver,” a spokesperson from NCL told T+L at the time. Despite the cancellations, the cruise industry continues to rebound since COVID-19 closures.

All vessels operate on a cashless system with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. Pricing changes over time, but the fastest "premium" service on Norwegian vessels recently was priced at $39.99 per person per day, if you bought it in advance. Norwegian also offers a less expensive plan that doesn't allow video streaming for $29.99 per person per day if purchased in advance.

Later, this area was turned into cabins and a two-deck movie theater, later to be used as a casino. Norwegian was responsible for many of the cruise innovations that have now become standard throughout the industry. That said, passengers who are 18 to 20 can purchase and consume beer or wine on ships in international waters with permission from parents or legal guardians.

Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Epic, for instance, have the Cavern Club, a reproduction of the British club that gave rise to the Beatles. It comes complete with a cover band that plays the group's greatest hits. Many of Norwegian's biggest ships have state-of-the-art theaters as big as those you'd find on Broadway, with big-name productions to match. Norwegian Bliss, for instance, has the Tony Award-winning "Jersey Boys." Norwegian cruises are very unstructured vacations, and that's by design. In a typical summer, the line will deploy nearly half its ships to Europe while sending several more to the West Coast to sail to Alaska from Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Seward, Alaska.

Individual tickets are 1.60 BGN each, but they can’t be used on the buses, trams, or trolleybuses. There are three floors, each featuring detailed exhibits on warfare in Bulgaria from antiquity and the Middle Ages to World War II. You’ll see rebel flags, military uniforms, and artifacts, including the personal effects of actual soldiers. There’s also a collection of vehicles, including tanks and fighter planes. This is a high-end pedestrian street filled with fashionable boutiques and designer shops, but it’s worth the stroll for the view of snow-capped Vitosha Mountain.
